Theseus är en av den grekiska mytologins ädlaste hjältegestalter. Han var son till kung Aigeus och Aethra/Aithra (som var dotter till kung Pittheus i Troizen) samt gift med Hippolyte/Antiope och senare med Faidra, samt far till Hippolytos. När Theseus gick in i grottan fäste han tråden vid ingången och rullade upp det efter hand som han trängde in i irrgångarna och när han dödat Minotaurus var det sedan lätt för honom att följa tråden tillbaka ur grottan.
